Author Natalie Gibson takes over Satin Sheets Romance for Beltane Blitz

Beltane Blitz

The old religions, the ones based on nature and the progression of the year, have always fascinated me. Midsummer (Summer Solstice), Midwinter (Winter Solstice), Beltane and Samhain are my favorites. The Daughters of Women in my Books of Sinnis are witches of sorts, and through them I pay tribute to the old ways.  I enjoy combinding the old with the new and adding a dash of fantasy and imagination to invent their own celebrations and holidays.

In Ishtar Bound, the Daughters celebrate Mother's Midwinter.  It was a lot of fun inventing that section. Doing so gave me a real insight into how the Daughters believed.

I wrote a short story of Sinnis called Gwyneth's Anchor as free content for my website.  It follows Gwyneth through her first Beltane and her mating with Nurzhan Turel, her Nephilim Guardian.

I chose this excerpt because it explains the what, why and how of the Daughters' Beltane celebration, plus there is a little teaser of the romance between Gwyneth and Nurzhan.

"Beltaine used to be a celebration of the beginning of summer, a prayer for a good growing season, and a celebration of the Great Marriage. Like with all holidays, the Daughters had put their own spin, their own traditions over those of old. For them Beltaine was a celebration of the joining of Ki, mother earth, and Yahwe, the Shinar who fell in love with the blue planet and its life. They became Kiyahwe. Beltaine was to thank Yahwe for choosing Ki and to thank Ki for accepting Yahwe.

The strength of the shield, or veil, that protected the life on earth from being harvested by the Shinar was cyclical. Twice a year it was at its weakest. It was not coincidence that these fell on Samhain and Beltaine when ancient religions believed the barrier between the world of the living and that of the dead was thinnest. Many superstitions are based in truth that could not be understood at the time the traditions were set in place. Such was the case with the Beltaine fires and White Dancers.

They hoped to trick the Shinar, if they were able to vaguely see through the veil, into thinking that they didn't need to come through because other Shinar were already here. The bonfire simulated their bright glowing power and the dancing people dressed all in white were costumed to reflect that light, mirroring the Shinar themselves.

Most of all, the holiday was just an excuse for a party. All cultures needed traditions and celebrations. They built a sense of community and common purpose. The first part of the celebration was for everyone, every age. Family appropriate activities included maypoles, feasting and flower wreath making. After dark the activities became more rigorous and sensual. There was dancing around the fire, judging of the huts, selection of partners, couples dancing and then retiring to the huts.

This would be the only year that Gwyneth and Lillian could do both the maypole dance and the fire dance. They danced the maypole as 'virgins', though Gwyneth was the only true virgin of the group, and then they would try to attract a partner with their dance around the fire. Gwyneth was glad that she didn't have a choice then. Nurzhan would choose her and she didn't have to worry about a thing. Lillian wasn't so lucky. There was the possibility that no one would be drawn by her dance or choose her hut. It didn't happen but the threat of embarrassment was there to make the dancers take this seriously.

The fire was lit and the children tucked into bed. Gwyneth and Lillian held hands, their hearts aflutter. There were a lot more people here than either of them expected. Other branches of the Daughters had sent representatives and many of them were men. The Nephilim were in abundance and, as soon as the dancing started many of them displayed their true forms. Giant and winged they glowed in earnest, not reflected light. Nurzhan didn't seem to be among them.

Gwyn and Lilly lost themselves in the dance. They spun, circling the fire, alternating their sides so that one wasn't always too hot from the flames and the other chilled by the night air. They threw their arms and legs up with abandon. The music wove a spell with its techno lulls and crescendos overlaid with tribal beats and deep bass.

They collapsed laughing on the cool grass and lay watching as the sparks rose up reaching for the moon. A guy about their age, maybe a little older, approached them, somewhat timidly. He had two cups filled with mead, which he offered them. “May I sit with you at bit?”

They sat up and took the drinks. Lillian must have answered him. Gwyneth didn't care. The honey sweet liquid was cold and it soothed her throat and quenched a thirst she hadn't known was there. As she lowered her now empty cup, Nurzhan came into view. He was dancing around the fire.

His skin glistened with the sweat of his exertion. He wasn't holding anything back but his glance Gwyneth's way said he wasn't losing himself. He was dancing for her. She had never seen so much of his flesh. He was wearing a pair of pants that were white leather. Their edges didn't meet on the sides and were held together by a single lace that criss-crossed itself from ankle to hip, leaving a wide four inch strip of skin visible. A strip of fur hung in front of his important bits, a loincloth tied around his waist. There were feathers tied in his hair that fluttered with his movements. His wings were tucked tightly behind him, blacking out most of the fire when he turned towards her. His birthstone, the blood red teardrop, hung on his neck.

Gwyneth wanted more than anything to have tonight go well. She wanted this to be easy on Nurzhan, the beautiful creature who danced for her. She wanted this to all be over so they could be together like they were supposed to be.

With a single down-sweep of wings, Nurzhan shot into the air. He circled a minute before landing at her feet. He held his hand out and she took it. He pulled her up. “You look beautiful, Gwyneth. This is the perfect night to make you my Sinnis.”

Standing so suddenly had made Gwyneth a little woozy. The mead on an empty stomach didn't help either. Maybe it was the nearness of Nurzhan or the anxiety for the events of the night, but she was uneasy. “Dance with me first?” She wrapped her arms around Nurzhan's neck and closed her eyes. He pulled her tight against him. The music was softer now but the rhythm just as driving. The dancing was more like having sex with clothes on.

Nurzhan whispered in her ears, his breath taunting the skin it grazed. “I have always been yours. Tonight I make you mine.” She threw her head back and he kissed the column of her neck. He spoke against the hollow there between the clavicles, “Here you will wear my birthright, marking your body's acceptance of mine.” Time slowed down for her while she was overrun with sensations. The world narrowed to include only Nurzhan."

If you enjoyed that bit (by far the most boring and educational of the story), you can read the whole story for FREE.  Visit my website and download it.  Gwyneth's Anchor was written to be read after Veil of Ishtar (book 5 of Sinnis).  Sign up for my monthly newsletter if you would like notifications about new Sinnis Shorts or the sixth and final book of Sinnis coming out at the beginning of 2014.  I have a great contest going on for the re-release of my gaslight-era horror book, Hateful Burden, right now too.

Have a wonderful Beltane and thank you for stopping by!

Krystal's Satin Sheets Romance Review of Natalie Gibson's Book of Sinnis Series

Ishtar Bound (Book 1 of Sinnis)
by Natalie Gibson
Buy: AMAZON
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Length: 199 pages

Surrounded by magical enemies with an intimate knowledge of her abilities, a matchmaking witch of the highest rank must fulfill both her duty to her coven and her desire for a love of her own, even if the two goals collide.

Maeve Lovejoy has always been good at her job even though her service comes at such a high cost. Though her matchmaking abilities are stronger than ever, the most potent in any coven's recorded history, her introduction to Aaron has confused matters. Believing she's found a partner who can love her and allow her to continue practicing her arts, she shares her secrets with him. Is it a coincidence that soon after, that same information is used to locate and murder Maeve's matches? When Aaron goes missing, is it because he is a member of a rival black magic sect or because he has fallen victim?

For mature readers only.

Krystal's Review....
I actually read this book last, after reading books 2-4. Don't ask me why. Call it a blonde moment. I soooooooo wish I had read this one first. So don't make my mistake.

Ishtar Bound introduces us to Gibson's world of angels, demons, and witches Oh My! The Daughters are a sect of women blessed with certain gifts and magic. They are very organized and each woman has a special purpose within the society of sorts. They also have hierarchal titles that define their rank in the group. It feels like a lot at first, but just keep going. It will all smooth out and make sense very quickly. This book set the stage for the war between the Daughters and the SOFE, witches that are using blood magic to start a magical war. Be prepared for a bit of gore to go along with the villains in this story. They are cruel and evil in the darkest sense of the word.

I loved getting to know Maeve and where her story started. We get to see how happy her position as matchmaker makes her, but also the loneliness she feels because she doesn't think she will ever feel the same love match she helps others find. A lot of things about her friend Nathalia are also explained in this first book. Be sure to pay close attention to her. Another character to remember is Tara Kay *wink*, her book is my favorite of the series.

Natalie Gibson's world is one you will be sucked into completely. Her characters are well developed and unforgettable. The sex is HOT, the suspense is nail-biting, and the stories are original and unique.

Nathalia Lovejoy should be dead, she can remember committing suicide, but she wakes up in a ancient tomb. Her voice destroyed, she must rely on a new source for her magical ability, telepathy, in order to communicate with her savior. Nathalia has a real distaste for men. Lucky for her, Eiran Kafziel is not a man. He is a demigod, a halfbreed, unlike anything she has ever known. He found her in the moment of her death, repaired her body, gave her his holy blood, forever changing her into a Sinnis. She must come to terms with the fact that she is attracted to him, even loves him.

Along the way she discovers a whole world of mythical creatures living among humans. She battles her own hunger for violence and releases a demon from his 500 year prison. Can she become the weapon against that newly freed evil and save the world from his plans, or is she better suited to be his dark queen?

Krystal's Review....
The TRANSIT OF ISHTAR will grab you and not let go. Gibson has created a fantastic world where Nephilim/Angels seek to find their forever mates. We learn more about the supernatural world and the lengths they will go to destroy the world or protect it.

Book 2 focuses on Nathalia, a woman of power, who finds herself alive after committing suicide and playing a huge part in a much larger fight for the world than she could have ever imaged existed. We journey with her through the difficulty of trusting a man, something she never wanted to do again. One of my favorite parts of the book was where Eiran's mark became part of her body.

This book is full of beautiful symbolism and a passionate love story. You won't be able to quit turning the pages.

Ishtar Anomaly (Book 3 of Sinnis)
by Natalie Gibson
Buy: AMAZON
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Length: 196 pages

Camilla Lovejoy is barren because her natural healing ability cannot differentiate between a desired pregnancy and a unwanted parasite, but wants children desperately. Nanae is the Nephilim with healing talents that could enable Camilla to carry a child to term, but Nephilim cannot procreate. They turn to a friend and sometimes lover of the Daughters of Women, Israel. Izzy, as his friends call him, is happy to aid Camilla achieve her dream of motherhood. He loves Camilla but has always felt there was something missing in the traditional two person relationship. Now with Nanae in the mix he may have found the perfect solution. Can Nanae share his Sinnis with another man? Can Camilla handle her lovers loving each other? Will Israel survive the appetites of both? Will the hunger that Nanae battles constantly win and force him to destroy everything that he has come to love and need?

This is an extremely graphic novel with sexual situations for open minded adults, with not only m/f/m scenes but also m/m/f with a sprinkle of BDSM between two superhuman men and a pregnant petite.

Krystal's Review....
Great love story and very hot. The book centers around a Male Guardian (Nephilim), Israel (human to begin with) and the female lead Camilla (a very powerful healer).

Get your fans out because you will need them or a cold shower after reading this story. If you are not up for a hot and heavy m/m/f threesome though, I wouldn't recommend this book. But if you are, you won't be disappointed.

Camilla's powers remove foreign cells from bodies, unfortunately her ability can't tell the difference between a cancer cell and a pregnancy. This means she will never be able to carry her own child and she has caused many miscarriages, before she realized her powers effects.

As a mother who struggled with fertility to have a child I really connected with Camilla and her desire to do whatever is necessary to have a baby. These two men fight for her to have the one thing she desires most in the world, a baby.

I felt like the book really centered around Camilla and her coming to terms with a loss in her past, but it also really showed growth for the two male leads. Both went through a great deal of changes, physically and emotionally before the story was out.

I love seeing characters grow and mature and this was a huge part of the overall theme. The series itself is really building in tension and I can't wait to read the next book!

To to this Kay and her Guardian must wake old allies, create new ones and trust in the growing but fresh bond between them. Will Special K rediscover her magic in time? Can the family land she loves protect her? Does the goddess rise to save her chosen?

Krystal's Review...
Another winner from author Gibson! The Sinnis series just keeps building steam and this book is no exception. Ishtar Rising is my absolute favorite of the four books.

Tara Kay is a fun quirky character and I instantly loved her. The green hair just endeared her to me more. She's had a hard life and been betrayed by a lot of people over the years. Even the Daughters don't want to have anything to do with her because they think she uses magic in the style of their enemies. It's caused her numerous problems with them.

Her Guardian was a fabulous surprise (I won't say more to keep from spoiling) but I loved the new angle this book took and the information that came together in this story really made the overall series story arc that much more powerful for me.

The emotional connections and bonds between the characters in this book were fabulous. The book was erotic, fun, sexy, thrilling, suspenseful, and an adventure all wrapped into one. I do have to say that I was nearly brought to tears twice in this book. It was a winner for me through and through.
