Review

New twist on a traditional theme. I enjoy a story with intriguing surprises. So, I’m reading along, enjoying the story, sure I know what’s going to happen, then Kemp throws in a delightfully unexpected curve! Every detail she brought to my attention played a significant role in the story later. Even the ending was a bit unexpected, so literally (enjoy the pun), she kept me guessing until the very end.

Despite a few editing flaws, the characters are very likeable, and I started rooting for them at the very beginning. Luna’s strong counter to Gabe’s alpha was perfectly developed throughout, and the secondary characters were so well done, I’d welcome their stories in the near future. I admire Kemp’s ability to overcome the common curse of “first in a series” by presenting a new world to enjoy and leaving me with just the right number of questions. Well done! Four satin pillows.

Before Midnight is Jennifer Blackstream's take on the Cinderella story.  The novella is part of her series of re-imagined fairytales, Blood Princes.  I am a big Blackstream fan so when she contacted me with an ARC copy in exchange for a review I jumped at the chance.  It did not disappoint.  Aphrodite's Hunt and Under His Skin are two of hers that instantly jumped to my 'favorites' bookshelf and this one will be joining them.  

Before Midnight has all the iconic images we have come to associate with Cinderella but with a new twist.  There's a fairy, a pumpkin turned coach, a prince in need of a wife, a ball and a little something left behind to help identify her.  I won't spoil the surprise but I will tell you this was one of my favorite parts of the re-write. 

Loupe is Cinderella and her life is ruined because of a werewolf bite.  She can never have the life she wants.  She can never share her pain with anyone because if her stepmother or stepsisters ever found out they would not hesitate to kill her.  Meeting the prince one day by pure coincidence only makes matters worse.  The pain is more sharp because for the first time she can imagine how wonderful a normal life would be.

The pace was good and it kept my interest the whole way through.  It could be read easily on a weekend day.  The Cinderella character was much more three dimensional than the Disney version.  She is strong but her world has her beat down.  It doesn't take much for her to become the woman the prince needs; a powerful queen to help rule his kingdom and protect his people.

The story had a sex scene and a couple of wanton kissing scenes where they wanted it to go further but couldn't.  There was some violence but no more than the Grimm fairytales did.  It was a set up for the rest of the series which I cannot wait to read.  Next is a vampire story based on Snow White.  Sounds good, doesn't it?

“Mates Since Birth” started off with an interesting twist before teetering on the YA romance line, but as the plot thickened, which it did eventually, I found myself identifying with Ari and Dane. Ari is a strong heroine, and that’s always a plus. I love desire and action, and this read is full of both.

This is a light, fun read with feuding purists, family interference, and a touch of destiny.  Definitely a recommended read. Three and a half satin pillows.

Krystal's Satin Sheets Romance Review...

A new twist on shifters for me from Lia Davis. Wolves and Cats living together. Very cool premise and the characters will leap off the page and into your heart.

Dani is a strong and independent cat, but desperately craves the love of a true mate. She been alone a long time. Nevan, is human with some -supernatural qualities. I love that he is totally not bothered by shifters and doesn't let them intimidate him. It does help to know that he grew up with them. I hope in the next book we get to find out more about his history.

Suspense is added into the mix by the tragedy that brought these two packs together two hundred years ago that continues to haunt them even now. (I know... that's all I'm going to tell you, LOL. You will just have to read it.)

The story is fast-paced, shorter than I would have preferred, but it is just the start of the series. You will not want to break until you finish. I read it in one sitting. Lia does a great job of keeping you engaged and interested. The romance is sizzling hot and will leave you looking for an iced beverage to help cool off. Looking forward to the next one.

A very magical, gripping, exciting and romantic read that would not allow its reader to put it down for a moment (I should know). Great lovable characters, a story that is so vividly written it plays like a movie in your head and all in a fantastical world that makes you want to go for a visit. Any paranormal romance reader out there would love Hungry Moon-Quicksilver!

Raven lives a human life as much as she possibly can. Deeply burying her magical side due to the fact her mother is not a magical being and Raven herself does not want to accept it. Things change dramatically for her when she finds her thought to be best friend in a situation with the man she’s grown to care for deeply. She takes a trip to visit her father in Scotland and the floodgates open as wide as possible, pouring out more and more changes. Some negative, most positive, but what changes most for her is her heart once she meets Quinn...

Quinn is an incredible, magical hot stud muffin of a male that has been trapped somewhere not of earths plain many years ago and has yet to figure out a way to get back home. Being trapped for 75 years and having someone that has never given up looking for a way out for him, he becomes flawed when the he meets the one possibility to be set free and his body practically goes haywire. Now together they embark on a mission to get him home.

This book has a lot of paranormal to it, a hot wizard, demons, shape shifters and more! A must read hot romance, with a beautiful family feel, a handsome hero and beautiful (and kick butt) heroine and very magical element that sizzles the pages; definitely a great book to escape away with again and again! I look forward to much more of Claudy Conn’s works. I LOVE her writing style :)

Natalie Gibson's Review:

Aphrodite's Hunt was written for readers exactly like me.  If you like paranormal romance with vampires and werewolves, heavy on the erotic with plenty of blood drinking, wolf chasing and dominant males, then this is an excellent choice.  It was a quick and smooth read. The pace was steady but fast.  There was no slow build.  We are introduced to Gia on the worst night of her life.  Her mate has just cheated on her and her pack has called for an archaic (in her mind) ritual in which she must run and be hunted.  The victor will become her new mate.  To make matters worse, there is real magic here and her body betrays her at every turn.  She is aroused by the dominant males that would normally repulse her.  She runs to the only safety she can think of - the local vampire, Sorin.  Sorin is something much more interesting than a mere vampire and his condition complicates matters when all Gia wants to do is hide out in his home until the hunt is over.  Well, that's what she wants until she is actually inside Sorin's home.  Once there she is consumed by the need for him, and resist it though she might, she can't hide her arousal and increased heartbeat from a vampire.  

This book was well done for erotica that skirts the edge of horror.  I would say that a good 60% to 70% of the book was sex or thinking of sex, but maybe that was just me.  When it is not about sex, there is a lot of fighting, scrapping, and chasing (sometimes even those things are about sex).  This was an action packed read that I finished in just two nights. There is quite a bit of blood.  Sorin has lived in denial of his true nature for ages and when Gia comes in he loses all control.  He almost kills her several times, at least one of which is while they are having sex.  There is a lot of gripping of hips until they bruise.  Vampire/Werewolf loving...ah, sweet beautiful agony. 

The characters' back stories were wonderful and the creatures' mythologies were rich. Both main characters do a lot of real growth. They change throughout the story which made for a well rounded read.  Gia was just as strong as Sorin and that worked for me.  I don't enjoy wilting weeping female characters.  This had none of those.  It was well written and well planned.  I did not know what was going to happen next but I knew I had to keep reading.  I plan to read more from Jennifer Blackstream.  I've already bought, read, and reviewed the first in her Revenge in Vein Series.

Aphrodite's Hunt is awarded: 5 Satin Pillows...though, after a night with Gia and Sorin, they would probably be shredded to bits.
